Philadelphia Area State Officials Join With Turning Points For Children to Help Support Families Working Session Held About Developing Critical Funding for At Risk Youth Programs
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PR Log (Press Release) – May 10, 2010 – PHILADELPHIA – Turning Points For Children Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Vogel and several Philadelphia area elected officials came together recently to hold a summit about the need for critical services for local at-risk children and families.
Among the state officials in attendance were Sen. Shirley Kitchen, Rep. James Roebuck, Rep. Duane Milne (Chester County) and the senior staffs of Sen. Anthony Williams, Sen. Vincent Hughes, Sen. Christine Tartaglione and Sen. LeAnna Washington.
“We wanted to explain to our local officials that there is an urgent need for services in the community among at-risk children and families,” said Jack Luke, Director of the Office of Development and Communications for Turning Points For Children. “The state government needs to make sure that funding prevention services is a priority, especially since we can demonstrate a large need and a long standing tradition of strong results.”
At its 175th anniversary year in 2010, Turning Points For Children finds that with the downturn in the economy, more people are relying on support from the social services agency at the time when state government officials are having trouble maintaining current funding levels for critical services.
The meeting gave state elected officials an opportunity to learn about the many critical need services provided to the community by Turning Points For Children. At the organization, social workers and other specially trained workers deliver quality programs and services that demonstrate results by strengthening at-risk families.
“We supply a wide variety of services in the community that fulfill important needs such as after-school family strengthening through the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program; teen parenting through Time Out for Teens and Tots and even supports for kinship caregivers providing care for non-biological, relative children,” Chief Executive Officer Michael Vogel said. “The residents of Philadelphia would see their communities decline if it weren’t for the critical services that we provide to parents and relative caregivers, in the city and region, who struggle against difficult economic and environmental odds.”
